Overview

This is the most exclusive excursion from Madrid to El Escorial by comfortable bus and accompanying guide to visit El Escorial and its imposing Royal Monastery declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, as well as the monumental site of the Valley of the Fallen located a few kilometres away, in another beautiful enclave of the Sierra Madrileña.
We will start our tour to El Escorial with a guided visit of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial.

Symbol of the greatness of the Spanish Empire is an impressive construction of great artistic and historical value that houses jewels such as the Basilica, the Royal Library, the Pantheon with the tombs of almost all the Kings of Spain since Emperor Charles V or the palace buildings that occupied the different reigning dynasties.

After the guided tour to El Escorial we will have a free time to have a lunch before continuing the route to the nearby Valle de Cuelgamuros where the highest Christian cross in the world (150 meters) announces the location of the Valley of the Fallen, an extraordinary and controversial architectural work erected in honour of the fallen in the Civil War that gave way to a long period of dictatorship in Spain. We will visit the interior of the basilica carved into the rock and will admire the grandeur of the monumental complex its singular beauty in terms of architecture and landscapes. Enjoy your vacation with us.

My First visit to Madrid

The tour guide was very friendly and informative. The tour and tour bus was hard to find, there was no identification.

Only half the tour

The day was not brilliant pouring with rain but El Escorial was worth the visit, our guide Paco (from Venezula) was very informative. The tour was quite comprehensive, and although those who spoke English were in the minority, equal time was given by the guide. The problem came at the Valley of the Fallen. When we pulled into the car park there was only one coach there, possibly because of the rain - we thought. We lined up outside of building in the pouring rain, this was due to security, and eventually entered in the entrance hall. At this point it was explained that we could not go into the rest of the building due to religious services - this was the Thursday prior to Easter Sunday. Notice ststed no guided tours after 4:30, (this could have explained why there were no other coaches in the car park) we didn't arrive into the hall until 4:40. The guide apologized, but there was nothing he could do. On the bus he informed us that if we were still in Madrid the following Tuesday, the company would let us do the tour again - nice gesture - but no-one could take up the offer. I deliberately selected this tour as it did not just drive by the monument, disappointed, perhaps the tour operator could have been more pro-active checking schedules for the Easter period.
